No, you know what? That's fair. That's on me, I've never engaged with Danmachi outside of [redacted], I conflated it with isekai because of its light novel origins. I'll fix it.

It’s not just TYD, they use both 64 & TYD as a cudgel against all the games that followed behind it.

Never mind the fact that 64 is the weakest of the two. I also love how much caterwauling goes on about partners eventhough both 64 & TYD eschewed traditional RPG mechanics by only letting you use 2 members of Mario’s party in battle which would be Mario & whoever else.

I will also say that not all 30 FPS games are created equal some can be terrible to play some not.

The problem with Nen Impact's graphical quality isn't the visuals themselves, but the knock-on effects that looking "cheap" may have. If people aren't buying it, aren't hooked in enough to give online a shot, then the game gets relegated to a Discord fighter. Which is not ideal- no game wants its players to need an additional app to find matches. Thats how games go on life support, if not die out. Thats not unavoidable, of course. If the value proposition is altered, you may get more takers- ie, if it doesn't "look" like a premium game, maybe don't charge premium prices. Or maybe add a lot of content. Something that makes spending the money a bit easier for curious about the game.

All that to say- I may not care overmuch about the graphics, but they can be absolutely vital for the long term success in community driven games.

Not going to lie, this... so much. I honestly think TTYD is one of if not the best game in the series, but holy shit I audibly groaned when they announced the remake because people can get really annoying about it. Sticker Star really isn't the worst thing ever, man.

Okay, to be fair, the longtime producer of the Dragon Quest series recently stepped down, a move believed to be part of Square Enix's restructuring plans. The reasoning for this is unclear, but if I were a betting boy, it's probably due to the fact that that we haven't heard squat about the HD-2D remake and 12 since they were announced... three years ago?

Regardless, those projects aren't getting cancelled, but Square needed to do something witht he Dragon Quest series. They missed a massive opportunity witht he Switch.

I am so over the 60 FPS obsession. It's one thing if it were a fighting game like Street Fighter or a stylish action game like Devil May Cry, but doing this for turn-based RPGs like Thousand Year Door has shown the performance junkies have lost the plot. And no, dinguses, it's not because of the Switch's power, it's not because of crunch, it's not because of laziness, the developers prioritized what they wanted to. That's it, that's all it is. I'm going to enjoy myself for the writing and characters, not obsess over framerate like some loser who has a fit over a single muddy texture that was never meant to be looked at under a microscope.

As for other things, the SE stuff is more of the same. The execs are idiots who keep whipsawing while the teams just try to get stuff done. This will all stop once the Dragon Quest III remake comes out.

I wonder if there will be any new Miku cards or if they'll all be reskins of existing cards like the ones shown on the tweet. As for handheld Marios, I'm fond of Superstar Saga. Outside of the repetitive music of Joke's End, it was a great experience that I had fun exploring every last corner of.

Some times these people need to be taken to task. And boy the Paper Mario fanbase need to be called out for their pettiness.

I agree. I think it's silly to let a fanbase ruin a piece of media for you. Every fan base has annoying people in it but it also helps I probably don't interact with fanbases much outside my own group of friends. I don't like how annoying certain parts of the internet can be with the "Vivian Is Trans" thing but I don't let it them affect my enjoyment of Paper Mario. Speaking of which, according to Spanish leakers spoiler[Vivian is just a girl now. The 'relation withheld' thing is in reference to Beldam not liking the name Three Sisters because it doesn't sound tough enough so she refuses to call them that. So the script overall is more accurate to the Japanese version like Super Mario RPG's remake was but they're keeping Vivian just being a girl now as the universal canon. ]

I wouldn't call myself a TTYD fanboy... at least not the kind like certain people who says any Nintendo Direct that doesn't announce anything related to Paper Mario as being a failure and waste of time... but it is my favorite of the Paper Mario games. I also like Super Paper Mario and Origami King. I'm also not one to usually die on the hill of 60fps but I think it's worth considering the gameplay style of games that focus on timed hits might end up making things a bit awkward with possible input delay or something to arise from it. It would certainly be nice if it was at least matching the original game at the very least. As far as the censorship goes. Yeah, it sucks it's happening but I expected it after what happened with Tokyo Mirage Session and the Link's Awakening remake which both used the censored English release as the basis for both even in Japan so using the English versions of these games as the base is about what I expected. Overall I appreciate the more accurate dialog even if other stuff is going to be changed. And if people really want the original experience there's a fan translation of TTYD out there that sticks to the Japanese script.

What I'm curious, though, is if "Chicago Mode" actually changes Breakers to play more like Crystal Legacy did, as reports back in the day indicated that it played very different from Breakers, like having just a single level for the super gauge & supers having a universal command (pressing "ABCD" together), instead of the three-tier super gauge & specific motions for each super. The video clearly shows that Chicago Mode still has three levels, so I'm curious how things are different.

If you couldn't tell, I absolutely love Breakers. It's a highly underrated fighting game.

Bad attitude is bad attitude, and no matter how "unfair" it might be to judge a work off of a "vocal minorty", the fact is that it can and will define a work for folks. Just look at My Little Pony and the Bronies. I, for one, appreciate the effort that the folks working on the TYD remake have put into it and I think that the bellyaching over the framerate is worth Shining a spotlight onto, both to shame bad actors out and to hopefully educate folks that this shouldn't be how you talk about media.

I think there's a big gulf between a vocal fanbase championing a single game in a series to the point of excluding any other game in the series or even in other series, and folks who have adopted a character as a part of their gender identity. People headcanoning Vivian as trans aren't hurting anyone. Paper Mario fans turning their noses up at four other Paper Mario games and four Mario & Luigi games... that's a lot of hate from so-called fans.

Also, I'm gonna need you to not refer to a changed script as "censorship", because words have meaning. A differing script doesn't mean anything has been censored, it just means they decided to translate something differently. The DS Chrono Trigger port isn't "censored" because Chrono's mom doesn't say "Good morning, Chrono!" anymore or Yakran doesn't shout "Yes, indeed!" when they do special attacks. It's normal for texts to have multiple translations, there are seven different translations for Les Misèrables alone.

This is great input, I definitely appreciate this stuff. Thanks for clarifying the old Chicago mechanics, it'll be fascinating to see if any of it makes it to the final version of Breakers Revenge: Chicago!

Pretty much. TYD's fandom basically acts like no other Mario RPGs exist and that TYD could do no wrong, glossing over a lot of genuine problems the game had like tedious backtracking. Heck, I find a lot of the best writing in the Paper Mario series was actually in Super Paper Mario (nerd chapter mysteriously becoming VERY relevant). Same problems happened with the fandoms of Earthbound, Metroid, Fire Emblem, where it was a bunch of angry, bitter snobs wallowing in past days. Inability to curb that just shows a lack of concern about being welcoming to newcomers
